What is a Cuddle Ewe™ UnderQuilt Mattress Topper?

The Cuddle Ewe™ Underquilt is layer upon layer of thick natural wool batting sewn within a soft and breathable cotton cover.

What does it do?

The Cuddle Ewe™ Underquilt, when placed between your mattress and fitted sheets, transforms your bed from something routine you have been accustomed to laying on, into something sublime you are cradled in. The natural wool batting supports and distributes your body weight more evenly, allowing pressure points and tender points to be relieved and supported and manages body temperatures and moisture. As a result, the Cuddle Ewe™ Underquilt can allow deep restorative sleep, let you sleep through the night, relieve morning stiffness, reduce fatigue, soothe muscle tender points, and relieve soft tissue muscle pain.

Who does it help?

The Cuddle Ewe™ Underquilt can be used by anybody, whether or not you have any physical ailments. It helps people with FMS, Chronic Fatigue, Arthritis, Back problems, broken bones, hip troubles, and a number of other ailments.

What is it made with?

The Cuddle Ewe™ Underquilt is made from 100% pure, all natural wool. We garnet the wool into a batting and then enclose it in a heavy all natural cotton ticking material.

How do I put it on my bed?

The Cuddle Ewe™ Underquilt should be centered on top of your mattress (and mattress pad if you have one), followed by a breathable cotton protective covering and then your regular fitted sheet.

Will my fitted sheet still fit?

Yes, but it may be a very tight fit. Deep pocket sheets are available at all bedding supply stores.

What is the size?

In it’s relaxed state, the Cuddle Ewe™ Underquilt will measure smaller than the fabric dimensions. When measuring the Cuddle Ewe™ Underquilt, the fabric should be pulled tight and measured from seam-to-seam. The dimensions of the fabric are:

  • Twin = 39” x 75”
  • Long Twin = 39” x 80”
  • Full = 54” x 75”
  • Queen = 60” x 80”
  • King = 78” x 80”
  • Cal King = 72” x 84”
  • Travel Ewe = 31” x 73”

When placed and centered on the mattress, the Cuddle Ewe™ Underquilt will NOT completely cover the mattress. There will be about 2” of mattress showing all the way around the Cuddle Ewe™. This is to allow for placing of the fitted sheet over the Cuddle Ewe. With use, the Cuddle Ewe™ Underquilt will flatten and “stretch” to better fit.

What is the weight?

There are 3.5 pounds of wool per square yard in each size Cuddle Ewe™ Underquilt. The weights are as follows:

 Pounds of WoolFinal Weight w/Cover
Twin810
Long Twin810
Full1113
Queen1315
King1719
Cal King1719

What is the thickness?

Once the 10+” of wool layers are stuffed into the cotton cover, the final thickness of the Cuddle Ewe™ Underquilt is approximately 3”. With use, the Cuddle Ewe™ Underquilt will compress to a thickness of about 1.5” to 2”. This is very normal and to be expected. Once the wool has compressed, there is nothing that can be done to re-fluff it, but it will still be comfortable. With proper care, you can maintain the Cuddle Ewe’s loftiness for a long time.

What is trenching?

Trenching occurs when one area of the Cuddle Ewe™ Underquilt compresses faster than the rest of the Underquilt. Usually the area that is compressed more forms a “trench”. This is the area where you lay more often. It is a good indication that you are getting a better night’s rest, because you are laying in one spot more and not tossing and turning.

Will the wool shift or move around?

Once the sheet of wool batting is enclosed in the cotton covering, we tuft or quilt the Underquilt so that the wool will not shift or move around.

What is the lifespan Of the Cuddle Ewe™ Underquilt?

On average most people get about 5 good years of use with their Cuddle Ewe™ Underquilt. Exactly how long they lasts depends more on the person using it and what their needs are. Some people with greater FMS or Chronic Fatigue symptoms might replace theirs after only 2 or 3 years. We have also had customers not replace them for over 10 years. It all depends on what their needs are and how well they take care of the Underquilt.

How do you care for the Cuddle Ewe™?

The Cuddle Ewe™ Underquilt can not be washed or dry cleaned. This will ruin the wool. Wool fibers have small “barbs” that when wet and agitated will stick together much like Velcro. The wool then dries with clumps, making the Underquilt uncomfortable. The best way to care for it is to place an all natural, breathable cotton protective sheet over it before the regular fitted sheet.

Approximately once a week, or when you change your sheets, the Cuddle Ewe™ Underquilt should be turned or flipped. One time from end to end, the next time from side to side, so that all areas of the Cuddle Ewe™ are used.

The Cuddle Ewe™ Underquilt should also be vacuumed occasionally, using the upholstery attachment. This will clean the Cuddle Ewe™ as well as draw air through the wool fibers and help keep them loose and maintain them.

The Cuddle Ewe™ Underquilt also has loops sewn into the sides so that it can be hung outside and aired out once in a while.

Surface spots and stains can be spot cleaned with a damp rag or sponge and a mild soap and water solution.

My pet had an accident on the Cuddle Ewe™!!

When this happens, the best thing to do is go to your local pet supply store and get the products made for when your pet has an accident on the carpet. Dilute it down so that it is not as strong and slowly pour it over the spot. DO NOT squeeze it out. Let it lay over a tub or outside and dry on its own. You may need to do this a couple of times to eliminate the odors. This will not guarantee the Cuddle Ewe™ will still not be ruined, but it may salvage it so that it is still usable.

This same cleaning method should be used when other accidents or spills occur. A mild soap & water or vinegar & water solution can also be used.

My Cuddle Ewe™ has an odor

For most people, there is no odor to the Cuddle Ewe™ Underquilt. However, some people with higher sensitivities to odors may smell something. Some say it is a chemical odor, some say it smells like sheep, some can’t say what it is they smell. For most people, airing the Cuddle Ewe™ Underquilt out or spraying it with Lysol or fabric sprays will eliminate this smell. For some people though, the smell never goes away. The more sensitive to odors a person may be, the stronger the odors will be to them, and unfortunately, no amount of airing out or spraying with fabric sprays will make the odor go away for them.

Are any chemicals used?

The wool has been cleaned with a mild soap and water solution and rinsed in hydrogen peroxide. No chemicals have been added.

Is the Cuddle Ewe™ hypo-allergenic?

The Cuddle Ewe™ Underquilt is made with all natural products, but it is not hypo-allergenic.

I am allergic to wool

Is it a contact or respiratory allergy?

Contact Allergies: This occurs when you wear a wool sweater and it makes you itch. With the Cuddle Ewe™ Underquilt, this will not happen because the wool is enclosed in a heavy cotton ticking material and you will have your fitted sheet over top of it, so there are at least 2 layers of fabric between you and the wool.

Respiratory Allergies: If wool makes you sneeze or if you have other respiratory troubles such as asthma, then the Cuddle Ewe™ Underquilt is not the product for you. Even though the wool has been cleaned, some people with respiratory allergies still can not use the Cuddle Ewe™ and we do not recommend it if you have respiratory ailments.

Wool makes me hot!!!

Because we use all natural wool, the Cuddle Ewe™ Underquilt is very breathable. The wool should not make you hot, but will help to regulate your body temperature instead. The wool will absorb your body heat and distribute it throughout the wool, keeping you at a more even temperature. If you are too warm, the wool will also draw moisture away from your body, and then release it back into the air when you get up in the morning. The Cuddle Ewe™ can be used all year long, in all types of climates and temperatures.

What type of mattress do I need to use?

The Cuddle Ewe™ Underquilt is a mattress topper. It is meant to be used on top of any type of mattress you are currently using and help enhance it make it more comfortable.

How does the Cuddle Ewe™ compare to other mattress toppers?

Because of the uniqueness of the wool used in the Cuddle Ewe™ Underquilt, we can not compare it to the foam or down mattress covers that are currently being made. They are all made from different products and cannot be fairly compared, because they all do different things.
